Black Friday

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and what comes to my mind is family and FOOD! Of course what comes to some peoples mind is SHOPPING. Personally I think that is terrible! Thanksgiving is supposed to be spent with family and friends in the warmth of a home, not a shopping center. It is supposed to be a day of thanks not a day of "what kind of deal can I get this year".

I'm not really sure when this new "holiday" began as I'm a guy and I was never really into shopping. I do know that it started out as "Black Friday" which actually started on Friday.  These days it is leaking into Thursdays festivities.  The media starts talking about all the good deals a month ahead of time. I hear more about the shopping frenzies than I hear about Thanksgiving itself.  Over the last couple years, the deals are starting earlier and earlier. I've heard that some of the stores are planning on opening as early as 4pm on Thanksgiving Day. My mom's friends are planning their Thanksgiving dinner around what time Art Vans is opening.  I really have a problem with that!

Back when I was little, all the shopping had to be done by Wednesday. Gas, groceries, gifts, or anything else we might have needed because everything was closed.  When I say everything, I mean everything.  If my mom forgot something, it meant Sawyer was running next door to borrow from our trusty neighbors.  It seems like these days it's hard to find something that is closed! I think this is wrong. As I said earlier, Thanksgiving is a day to be spent with family enjoying each other's company, filling our bellies and watching the Lions lose..

A lot of people will disagree with me and say if you don't like it, then stay home.  But there's another problem. I can't stay home because I have to work!  I have to work because all the idiots can't wait until Friday to open their businesses!

Here's my take on all this. Since "Black Friday" has basically become a holiday, I think we should be given "holiday pay" if you work it.  Most of the people who shop on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday are rude, grouchy, and mean.  I'm sorry lady, it's not my fault you waited in line for 3 hours in 60 mile an hour winds and blinding snow just to get in the door only to find out the lady in front of you got the last T.V. That doesn't give you a right to take it out on me.  I'm not here because I want to be, I'm here because I have to be. I've realized I am fighting a losing battle so I just have to deal with it.

So, to all you diehard shoppers, remember this and try to be nice. A smile goes along way!

Argumentative Essay

I've decided to do my argumentative paper on the topic of "Should teachers be able to carry a gun at school". Most people probably think I'm crazy after reading that but I promise you that I'm normal. This topics interests me a lot because I am a supporter of gun rights. My dad has always been an avid hunter and has always had a passion for guns, he has his CCW License (which allows him to carry a gun on most property) and now even teaches the class to many people who are interested in getting their own CCW license. He has done a great job keeping me informed about our 2nd Amendment.

I chose this topic because I know quite a bit about the topic but I would like to do more research on it. In my high school debate class, I took part in a debate with a very similar topic and it was very interesting learning about it. As a supporter of this I believe there are a few things flawed with our current system that no one seems to really notice. Some of these problems for me would be that police simply cannot respond quick enough to eliminate a threat inside of a school. If teachers had guns, the reactions to stopping school shootings or anything along those lines would be much faster and efficient. If teachers were put through the correct state certified tests I believe they should be able to protect students and workforce of the schools.

Essay Summary

I did my paper on the benefits of drinking coffee or tea.  I looked at it from a medical stand point.  There was quite a bit of information on the topic so it wasn't too hard to write it.  I did find a little more on coffee benefits.  I first wrote about coffee and then presented the tea benefits.

Some of the things I included were that coffee can help prevent skin cancer and diabetes.  It can also help lessen the chances of getting depression, certain other types of cancer and cellulite.  Tea can help lessen chances of developing many types of cancer and help to delay the aging process and fat production.  I learned a lot by writing this paper and I hope that when you read this you will learn a lot too and maybe even make a beneficial change to your lifestyle.

Ted Talks

In the Ted Talk, "How to Spot a liar"  Pamela Meyer shows us how you can find out that most, if not everyone is a liar. As she explains her reasoning throughout the video, she shows 2 main ways of how looks for lies. The first way was looking at someones speech. People that tend to be in denial or change the subject very frequently is an example of things she looks for. The second thing that Pamela looks at is body language. She says that the most important things to look for while in the midst of a conversation would be a lot of eye contact, and also look for a fake smile. Overall i feel as this video really hits it spot on with her ways of spotting liars. She shows a few good examples and really pushes her thoughts.

At the end of the day, compared to the other Ted Talks that I have watched in the past, I enjoyed this much more because than most others. I found an easy way to connect and go through situations where I can say "Wow someone did do this now that I think about it" or "Wow he was acting nervous now that I think about it". This video will help me with spotting out people lying in the future thanks to this Ted Talk and I'm very happy about that. She was very smooth with delivering her points and examples and everything seemed to flow very well. I enjoyed this Ted Talk very much!
